The city of Durham is located in North East England and is categorized as a cathedral city. The city is located to the south-west of Sunderland and south of Newcastle. It was founded over the final resting place of St Cuthbert and the Norman cathedral became a pilgrimage centre in medieval England. The modern-day economy is made up primarily of agriculture, industry and public services. Education is a vital part of the makeup of the community as well. New College Durham is the city's largest college of further education. Durham University was one of the first universities to open in England and has an international reputation for excellence and indeed, ranks in the top 150 of the world's universities.
